The current standard of care for frontline kidney cancer is tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment. Now there are a host of promising immune checkpoint inhibitors in trials for this indication, either alone or in combination with TKIs. In this interview, Robert Jones, PhD, of the University of Glasgow & Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Glasgow, UK, discusses the Phase III randomized IMmotion151 trial of bevacizumab and atezolizumab vs. sunitinib for advanced renal cell carcinoma (NCT02420821). Prof. Jones discusses the rationale behind the combination, the trial cohort and the results thus far. He also mentions other up-and-coming checkpoint inhibitor-TKI combinations in trials.
