Probiotics: changing the way we perceive them

Gordon Howarth, PhD of The University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia talks about probiotics and the way they are perceived. Unlike antibiotics which are widely used and recognised by the medical community, probiotics do not have the same recognition. Generally probiotics are harmless, with their mechanism of action changing from organism to organism. Dr Howarth highlights Streptococcus thermophilus TH-4, which secrets folic acid and could be used to ameliorate damage done by methotrexate, a chemotherapy drug. Recorded at the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO) 2016 Annual Meeting on Supportive Care in Cancer held in Adelaide, Australia.
