The first human clinical trial using FLASH therapy, FAST-01 (FeAsibility Study of FLASH Radiotherapy for the Treatment of Symptomatic Bone Metastases), was completed today by Varian, a Siemens Healthineers business, and the Cincinnati Children’s/UC Health Proton Therapy Center.

The FAST-01 experiment, which is examining the FLASH therapy’s clinical workflow practicality and treatment-related adverse effects, has reached its enrollment goal of ten patients with bone metastases in the extremities. Experts from Varian and various centers in the FlashForwardTM Consortium, including Cincinnati’s Children’s/UC Health Proton Therapy Center and the New York Proton Center, planned the clinical trial, which was informed by years of preclinical work.

Principal investigator and Medical Director of the Cincinnati Children’s/UC Health Proton Therapy Center, UC Health radiation oncologist, and professor emeritus at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, John C. Breneman, M.D., is leading the FAST-01 trial.

Emily Daugherty, M.D., an assistant professor of radiation oncology at UC and a UC Health radiation oncologist, and Anthony Mascia, Ph.D., DABR, an adjunct assistant professor of radiation oncology at UC and the Director of Medical Physics at the Cincinnati Children’s/UC Health Proton Therapy Center, are both supporting the trial.

FLASH Therapy (Flash Therapy)

FLASH therapy, an investigational therapeutic modality that delivers ultra-high dose rates of radiation therapy in less than one second, could be 100 times faster than traditional radiation therapy. For many years, the concept of ultra-high dose rate radiation delivery has been researched. FLASH treatment has progressed to the clinical study stage because to dedicated research and development by the Varian team and clinical collaborators in the FlashForward Consortium. Over 150 professionals in radiation oncology, translational sciences, and medical physics make up the FlashForwardTM Consortium, a 25-member consortium of institutions from throughout the world.
