As we approach World Lung Day on September 25, 2021, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of lung health, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States, owing to its difficulty in early detection.
Certain lung lesions may be dangerous or impossible to identify with typical biopsy techniques. As a result, lung cancer can progress before it is discovered.
While lung cancer screening and CT scans were previously effective in detecting abnormalities or probable tumors in the lungs, lung doctors now have a new technique. The new device, known as Ion, allows thoracic surgeons and pulmonologists to explore the human lung, which is made up of complicated tissue and a large network of thin and delicate airways, in order to reach hard-to-reach tumors. Nobody knows this better than lung cancer survivor Kathleen Keenan Weil. The minimally invasive, robotic-assisted tool shown in this video can help doctors identify lung cancers earlier and more accurately than existing technologies, allowing patients to begin effective treatment sooner and achieve better outcomes.
