Despite some forms of minimally invasive surgery being performed for some time, we are still lacking the analytical evidence that endoscopic thoracic surgery is better than that through a thoracotomy. In this interview, Joel Dunning, PhD, FRCS, of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Middlesbrough, UK, discuses the ongoing VIOLET study (ISRCTN13472721), a large multicenter randomized controlled trial of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) vs. open lobectomy for lung cancer. Dr Dunning also discusses why we might have a lack of data for robotic-assisted thoracic surgery. This video was recorded at the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Annual Conference 2018, held in Dublin, Ireland.
