Newswise — CLEVELAND—Scientists at Case Western Reserve University have identified new biomarkers for breast cancer that can predict whether cancer will return after treatment and can be identified from routinely acquired tissue biopsy samples of early-stage breast cancer using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Collagen, a ubiquitous protein present throughout the body, including breast tissue, is the key to that first assessment. The previous study has linked the collagen network, or the arrangement of fibers, to the aggressiveness of breast cancer. However, using simply conventional tissue biopsy slides and AI, Case Western Reserve researchers were able to conclusively establish collagen’s crucial function.

The researchers were able to establish that a well-ordered organization of collagen is a significant predictive indicator for an aggressive tumor and a likely recurrence using machine-learning technologies and a collection of digitized tissue samples from breast cancer patients.

In contrast, they discovered that a disordered or broken-down collagen infrastructure not only predicts but also encourages, a better result. They also discovered that a disrupted collagen network inhibits an otherwise aggressive tumor from migrating out of the breast tissue and aids in its prevention following chemotherapy and other cancer therapies.
