Venetoclax in combination with low intensity chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in the frontline setting, which although currently under evaluation by the FDA, has shown impressive results. Speaking at the 2018 Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO) Annual Meeting, held in Houston, TX, Alexander Perl, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, is excited to share updates on the use of venetoclax as a frontline therapy for AML patients who are not candidates for intensive chemotherapy. Dr Perl, who is in support of the treatment, states that high risk patient groups, such as those with kidney impairment or the elderly, and the drugs toxicity profile needs to be taken into consideration when offering venetoclax as treatment.
